The Font Gran

10 Plaça de la Font Gran Monistrol de Montserrat

It is named after the spring that supplies water to the whole town. The Font Gran was called until the 16th century Font de la Resclosella.

It has traditionally supplied water from the mouth and irrigation water for the gardens called Winter and Maians. The Font Gran is the main emergency of the aquifer system of the Montserrat massif. Monistrol concentrates most of the springs of the massif because the flood of the Guilleumes stream cuts the fertile layers into water that move from west to north. This stream is also known as the Font Gran or Canaleta stream.

In addition to the Font Gran, it is necessary to consider a good number of minor sources such as the source of Valentina, La Capella, La Graella or Els Paraires, among others, as well as several intermittent springs such as the Mentidera or Coll Cabiró.

The Plaza de la Font Gran sheltered the establishments of the old and powerful guild of paraires, which used the water of the fountain for washing, hanging and dyeing of the wool. It is built on the course of the stream and is a centre of social and administrative life.
