Priory Palace

1 Plaça Carles Amat Monistrol de Montserrat

The cloister of the Priory Palace is one of the most beautiful manifestations of civil Gothic architecture in Catalonia. It was built in the 14th century under the mandate of the priors of Montserrat, Ramon Vilaregut and Jaume de Vivers. The coats of arms of the two priors of Montserrat are represented in various parts of the house. The first, three horizontal stripes, and the second, a fish.

The house of the priors of Montserrat was known as "la Sala" and in it justice was administered and the tribute was received that the people of Monistrol had to pay to their feudal lord: the prior of Montserrat and then the abbot. There was also a prison in the hall, as the community of Montserrat was a lady of Monistrol in both civil and criminal matters.

In the room there was also one of the mills owned by the monastery and dependencies for the stables that had to carry the transport of goods to the monastery.
